How Does Sound Therapy Work?

Sound therapy aims to bring about optimum health. This occurs when we are vibrating in harmony at our natural and inherent resonant frequency.

Each aspect of our being including our physical, mental, emotional and spiritual aspects has a unique resonance, or rate of vibration. When one of the resonant frequencies of these aspects begins to vibrate out of sync, dis-ease or ill health occurs. When this happens, an imbalanced sound pattern or vibration has been established within one or more levels of our being.

There are 4 key ways that sound therapy works:

  1. Sympathetic resonance
  2. Brain wave entrainment
  3. Frequency following response
  4. Balancing left / right brain hemispheres

Let’s look at each of these in turn….

1. Sympathetic resonance

Sound Therapytools can help to restore the inherent vibration via sympathetic resonance. The sound therapy tools allow the area of imbalance to be brought back into balance through a like vibration. The like vibration is the vibration, which matches the original frequency and is the frequency the area most naturally wants to vibrate at. Through the projection of the sound tools’ pure vibrational sounds the waves go to the area of imbalance and the weak or dissonant frequency is transformed and optimal resonance is restored.

2. Brain wave entrainment

Sound therapyalso works through entrainment, which is a law of physics. The definition of entrainment is the predisposition that two oscillating bodies will lock into phase so that they vibrate in harmony with one another. Entrainment therefore occurs when two or more rhythmic cycles come into synchronisation. This principle is universal and can be found on many levels for example in chemistry, neurology, biology, medicine and astronomy.

Dutch scientist Christian Huygens discovered entrainment in 1656 when he placed two unsynchronised clocks side by side and found that they began to gradually synchronize. He discovered that the precision of this was so accurate that not even mechanical intervention had the capacity to calibrate them quite so accurately.

On a physical level entrainment can often occur in women who live together or who spend much of their time together. Their entrainment is of a bodily nature, through chemicals and hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. What can often happen to these women is that their monthly menstrual cycle begins to synchronise and they lock into step with one another.

This law of physics also applies to other more complex structures such as the brain. Brain wave entrainment relates to the brain’s actual electrical response to rhythmic sensory stimulation, such as pulses of sound or light. When the brain is given a stimulus either through the eyes, ears and / or one of the other senses, it emits an electrical charge in response. This is referred to as being a cortical evoked response. These cortical evoked responses are electrical responses which travel throughout the brain and ultimately become those things that we see, hear and feel. If the brain is presented with a repeating stimulus, it responds by synchronising these electric cycles to the same rhythm. This is commonly called Frequency Following Response or ‘FFR’ for short. The stimulus itself can be nearly anything; for example a physical vibration, a flash of light or a pulse of sound.

An example of this can be seen when the brain is presented with a sound instrument such as a drum which emits a rhythmic sound that stimulates the brain. This rhythmic beat is reproduced in the brain in the form of electrical impulses. When the drum beat increases or decreases in speed, but stays consistent the brain responds and synchronises its own electrical cycles to the same rhythm of the drum.

3. Frequency following response

Frequency Following Response (FFR) is used in sound therapy to stimulate special brainwave frequencies that are associated with positive well-being. As brainwaves are intimately linked to mental states of consciousness, by creating sounds associated with brainwaves that lead to peace, calm and healing, we bring about positive change.

An example of this can be found when working with the 4-8 hertz theta brainwave frequency. Theta is associated with both sleep and deep meditative states. Therefore working with a 4 – 8 Hz sound pattern is extremely helpful in manifesting the sleep/meditative state and can be used for example with someone suffering from insomnia, stress, tension and general anxiety.

With Sound Therapy it is possible to stimulating particular FFR’s relating to specific mental states including relaxation, healing, creativity, grounding etc. The FFR is also linked to the creation of deep spiritual states including deep meditation, lucid dreaming and moments of realisation.

4. Balancing left / right brain hemisphere

Part of the process of the electrical reactions within the structures of the brain comes from the synchronisation of the two hemispheres of the brain: the left and right, which are associated with masculine and feminine attributes. The left-brain is linked to the masculine principle of reason, scientific proof and emotional objectivity. The right-brain is linked with the feminine principle of creativity, intuition and empathy.

Sound tools allow the two hemispheres to be balanced and come together for maximum or optimum health, transformation and advancement. This is often referred to as ‘hemi-sync’ ® through the work of Dr Robert Monroe of the Monroe Institute, who has done much research into this theory.

The simplest way in which to achieve this via sound therapy is with the use of two different frequencies. We can see how this works for example with a frequency of 100 cps and another of 108 cps that are played in tandem. What happens with these two differing frequencies is that a third frequency is created from them. In this example it would be a frequency of 8 cps. What is also important in brain synchronisation is that the frequency is within a range that stimulates positive mental, emotional and or physical responses. In this example the balancing of the two hemispheres of the brain occurs within the Alpha range, this is linked with relaxation, light meditative states and creativity.

So we can see that sound therapy, through its inherent rhythmic vibrations and sounds can alter the brain wave frequency, entraining harmonious frequencies. Dissonant vibrations can be replaced, ensuring imbalanced areas locks into the rhythmic pattern and thus changing vibratory rates, from negative to positive. Sound Therapy has the wonderful potential to balance the two hemispheres of the brain allowing equilibrium to be achieved and to manifest positive states of consciousness linking to mental, emotional and physical balance, harmony and well-being.

How to Have a Healthy and Balanced Diet

A good diet increases your chances of living a longer, healthier life by reducing the risk of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. It may even help reduce the risk of developing some cancers.

Carbohydrates and Fibre: Half of our daily calories come from complex carbohydrates found in all fruit, vegetables, grain and cereals such as pasta, potatoes and rice. With carbohydrates such as breads, grains, and cereals, try to choose the whole grain, unrefined options, such as whole meal bread and brown rice. For a well-balanced diet, eat a range of healthy foods in the correct proportions. Complex starchy carbohydrates and proteins release energy gradually, helping you to keep going for longer, while vegetables and fruits are important sources of fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Protein-rich food are vital for building and repairing your body cells. Use the size of the palm of your hand as a guide to gauge the correct size of each food portion. Refined grains are known as simple carbohydrates and the processed products made from these refined grains, such as white bread, cake and pastries. Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils are rich in fibre which keeps your digestive system healthy, lower cholesterol and may decrease the risk of cancer. Limit the amount of processed foods otherwise you will lose out on fibre.

Milk and dairy products: These foods are high in calcium, protein, and vitamins, but they can be high in fat. So opt for low or reduced-fat dairy products, such as semi-skimmed or skimmed milk. Continue reading

Dermatology – Keeping the Outside Clear

Dermatology is something that many people do not want to think about. They think back to when they were teenagers, when they had to deal with all of the different problems of acne, of getting made fun of and having to deal with creams and wipes. However, there are a lot of other things that are associated with this. This specialty involves a lot more than simply having to go and deal with a kid and his zits. Any type of skin disease or issue is something that a dermatologist will need to deal with. There are a number of different things that they will need to do and look at over the course of time that are much more serious and problematic than the traditional acne.

Natural Constipation Remedies – Say Goodbye to Constipation

Finding natural constipation remedies is now more important than ever because  of the society we live in today. We live in a society where we are constantly  bombarded with advertisements and commercials about fast foods and other  processed foods that do a lot of harm to your body.

Most people have no idea about the existence of natural constipation remedies  and they instead go straight to the doctor and get addicted to laxatives.

Why should we choose natural constipation remedies?

When you eat any kind of processed foods, the digestive system has a very  hard time breaking the foods down and that has a lot of negative impacts on the  body and a lot of the internal systems have a hard time working correctly. This  is why the natural constipation remedies are the healthiest choice when it comes  to dealing with constipation because these natural constipation remedies  integrates well with the body.

The best natural constipation remedies?

You have probably heard me say before that I do not believe in any best  remedy because it varies for each person. I can however stand behind the natural  remedies because I am a living proof that they work. But as in all areas of  life, different individuals have different needs and not everyone will be happy  with a Toyota (by the way, I have no idea about what cars are good).

I will however quickly mention some of the natural remedies that are  acknowledged to work by different individuals and there is a chance that they  can work for you as well.

The different remedies

Flax Seeds: Flax seeds are rich in fiber and a lack in fiber is one of the  main reason that people get constipated.

Psyllium Husks: I am surprised that this does not get mentioned that often on  the different lists for natural constipation remedies, but it is a great remedy  to deal with constipation. It helps put pressure on the colon walls, which  contracts the muscle and the feces can easily pass through.

Olive Oil: Olive Oil is a great soldier against constipation because it has a  natural laxative function and is filled with many of the essential fatty  acids.

These are just some of the natural remedies that can make a great difference  in your fight against constipation. What we need to understand with the natural  constipation remedies is that they all help to soften the digestive system and  supports you in getting a relief.

I would at any time prefer the natural constipation remedies over some  chemicals that you can’t even pronounce, but if you have severe and life  threatening constipation or any other disease for that matter, then you should  consult your doctor before looking into the natural constipation remedies.

As someone who suffered from constipation, I can guarantee you that life is  much sweeter on the constipation free side and whether it is through  prescription drugs or natural constipation remedies is something you decide.

The Causes and Symptoms of Bronchitis

The cough that’s been keeping you awake all night for more than 2 weeks now  may be Bronchitis. If you are unaware about the symptoms of bronchitis, then you  are not alone. Often people prolong their illness mistaking bronchitis to be  flu.

Bronchitis is referred to as an acute inflammation of the air passages within  the lungs. Due to infection, the windpipe and the large and small bronchi  (airways) within the lungs become inflamed. This is when bronchitis occurs and  the thin mucous lining of these airways becomes irritated and swollen. As a  result of the inflammation, the cells of the mucous lining may leak fluids too  into the lungs. This secretion from the lungs leads to reflex coughing so as to  clear the secretions. Both adults and children are susceptible to bronchitis and  exhibit the same symptoms when infected. In the case of infants, the symptoms of  bronchitis are a lot similar to asthma and require immediate medical attention.  Patients of asthma when contact the disease, get asthmatic bronchitis.

The main cause of bronchitis is flu. The flu is caused by several viruses  including influenza A and B, which then develops in to bronchitis. There is  usually a case of an upper respiratory infection that leads to bronchitis. The  disease is also caused by a number of bacteria including Mycoplasma pneumoniae,  which causes so-called “walking pneumonia.” Other causes of bronchitis include-  infections post the inhalation of irritating fumes or dust, chemical solvents  and smoke (including tobacco smoke). Bronchitis can become symptoms in the case  of elderly patients or people with poor immunity or those who smoke or those who  have repeated exposure to lung irritants.

Bronchitis is both contagious as well as non-contagious. Bronchitis that is  viral or bacterial in nature is potentially contagious and patient needs to be  isolated. However, if bronchitis is due to smoking, air pollution, or other  inhaled irritants, then it is not contagious.

Now on to one of the most important things, which is- how to recognize the  symptoms of bronchitis? The telling signs of bronchitis are fever with chills,  muscle aches, nasal congestion, and sore throat. The constant dry cough is one  of the most common symptoms of bronchitis. In case the cough produces phlegm in  significant amount, then it is an indication of an infection in the lower  respiratory tract and the lungs. These symptoms can be confused with the ones of  pneumonia.

Patients suffering from acute bronchitis have continued forceful coughing  that causes soreness in the chest and abdominal muscles. In the extreme cases, a  patient can even injure his chest wall or lose consciousness after a coughing  spasm. Wheezing is another common symptom that the patients of bronchitis  exhibit. Asthmatic bronchitis symptoms include wheezing and shortness of breath,  apart from the other signs of bronchitis.

If you are suffering from these acute symptoms, you must turn to your health  care practitioner for medical assistance. If you are traveling or your regular  doctor is unavailable, then you can try telemedicine sources on the internet to  get bronchitis treatment. These sites have expert doctors, who can  write a prescription for your online, and you can get relief from the medicines  prescribed by them. Do not ignore the symptoms of this painful disease and get  medical help at the earliest and at your convenience from online doctors.

12 Healthy Habits for 2012

1. Daily meditation – sit for 10, 15, 20 minutes a day and just breathe. Pick  the time of day and the length of time that works best for you. For me 20  minutes before bed works best. Start small and work your way up to longer times.  Consistency is the key to maintaining the practice

2. Once a week make a meal with a new vegetable, grain or spice. Many  different foods have great healing properties so get out of a food rut and set  aside one day to make something new. Visit a farmers market to find local,  seasonal food for the best quality and nutrition. Look online for cooking tips  or recipes.

3. Try a new physical activity. Enjoy the outdoors? Go snowshoeing. Love to  dance? Try Zumba. Want to work out some aggression? Give kickboxing a go. Every  month try something new. Check community centres for drop in classes. Once you  find something fun that gets your heart beating sign up for a series of classes.  It’s easier to stay motivated when you have already paid for something.

4. Weekly low tech time. Walk through the woods, read a book down by the  ocean, take pictures in the mountains, have a coffee at a local café and people  watch. Whatever or wherever it should be electronic free. Let your mind slow  down by taking some time to unplug.

5. Take probiotics and vitamin D, especially in the winter. I usually  encourage a varied diet to get all the vitamins and minerals needed but these  two supplements have a powerful impact on the overall health of the body.

6. 20-30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity. Find a jogging buddy, take a  walk after dinner, go for a swim before work, take an exercise class at  lunch.

7. Have a monthly health treatment. Many alternative therapies have multiple  benefits. Try massage, homeopathy, cranio-sacral, acupuncture, osteopathy or  reiki. Check with your extended health care provider to see which therapies are  covered. Ask for a referral from a friend or trusted health care professional  and see which ones work best for you on a physical and emotional level.

8. Volunteer. Find an organization or cause that resonates with you. Studies  have shown volunteering has many health benefits, especially in older adults.  Higher functional ability, increased longevity, lower incidence of depression  and heart disease. Two hours a week is considered optimal. If making a weekly  commitment doesn’t work for you many organizations have special events or busy  times of year where extra help is needed.

9. Play. Create a new game, spend time with young kids and follow their lead.  Most of our adult life is structured including the activities we take part in.  Play is unstructured time that can help improve creativity and spontaneity.

10. Pick a brain activity. Crossword, puzzles, Sudoku or online brain games  such as Brain Workshop- a Dual N-back game. Do it daily, weekly or whenever you  have some spare time. Waiting for an appointment, on the bus, coffee break at  work.

11. Treat yourself at home. Self massage is therapeutic and relaxing. Foot  massage, head massage or hand massage are all accessible and require little  skill to be beneficial. 10 – 15 minutes while watching the news or listening to  a podcast is all it takes. Wanting to achieve more specific health benefits  speak to an acupuncturist to give you tips on points that would benefit your  condition and different techniques. There are also many books available on basic  acupressure.

12. Keep a journal. Busy mind, unexpressed emotions, scattered thoughts can  have a detrimental on ones health leading to insomnia, feelings of anger or  frustration, poor concentration or difficulty completing tasks. By writing  thoughts, feelings or things to do down it puts the mind at rest.

I hope these tips inspire you to take charge of your health this year and  explore new ways to achieve optimal health.

Have a happy, healthy new year!

Practice the Right Yoga Poses for Weight Loss

When it comes time to get skinny and fit into your bathing suit, practicing yoga is a fantastic method of losing weight. Besides eliminating stress, practicing the right poses gives your heart, as well as your muscles, a fabulous workout. Every day, men and women enjoy long-term weight loss results with no side effects whatsoever. Don’t worry about joining an expensive gym to start practicing yoga, as routines can be independently developed in the comfort of your own home. You can get skinny, as well as strong and flexible with yoga poses.

To begin, you can perform the Single Leg Rotations Kundalini yoga exercise. All you have to do is lie flat on your back and hold up your left knee 45 degrees. Keep your toespointed away from your body. Perform 5 full clockwise rotations with your elevated foot, followed by 5 more counter-clockwise ones without taking a break. Repeat the exercise with your other leg at least three more times. The exercise strengthens and tones your abs. Before long, you may actually begin to feel a 6-pack forming underneath your beer-belly. Your hips get loosened up too. What should start out as a 60 second exercise can work up to a few minute routine. In fact, you can alter the number of rotations and the angle of your bent knee to change-up your workout. 3 Simple Steps To Leaving Your Back-Pain Behind

Believe it or not, there are only 3 simple steps to leaving your back pain behind that you need to consider when it comes to finding relief! It is not uncommon to experience a sudden tremendous amount of pain in your lower or even upper back when doing strenuous or repetitive exercises. You may even experience back pain when working long hours, whether this may include lots of movement and bending over (such as in construction or house keeping) or remaining in a particular position for the entire day (such as working in an office). We are all susceptible to back pain during the course of everyday life, but thankfully you no longer have to worry about it ruining your plans if you just follow these 3 simple steps to leaving your back-pain behind!

Step 1: Know Your Limits

If you are employed in a field of work that you know has the potential to deliver back pain, make sure you know you limits. The worst situations of throwing out your back occur when you least expect it. Your aid may be in a particular state of importance (such as lifting a heavy object and a colleague or work partner is relying on your ability to maintain the hold), and you throw your back out, resulting in injury to not only yourself but very likely your work partner. In some recorded cases, this sort of incident has become fatal. Before attempting to lift a heavy load, know how much you can lift beforehand by exercising and testing the weight you can safely lift without putting either yourself or others at risk. Or if you are needed to do repetitive movements that put strain on your back, it is important to remember to schedule regular breaks during your day to allow your back a chance to rest. Alternative Scoliosis Treatment

The success of alternative scoliosis treatment is controversial and confusing  to say the least. I guess you could say that almost any alternative treatment,  “alternative” meaning not prescribed by a medical doctor would be defined this  way. I am certain that we as a culture have a preconceived idea of what a  healthcare provider is, does, and represents. The notion that alternative  treatments exist for many diseases, to some or perhaps most Americans is likely  to be considered risky, unsubstantiated, or even a hoax. Since we were very  young we were taught through experience, television, and our parents that  medical doctors are the only real source of trust when treating diseases.  Television portrays them as elite, sexy, smart hero types. The question becomes  is this reality?

Alternative scoliosis treatment would then be considered anything used to  treat scoliosis that is not medical. Since medical doctors, primarily orthopedic  surgeons, treat scoliosis in only one fashion using rigid braces or fusion  surgery then all treatment outside of bracing and scoliosis surgery would be  considered alternative. I would like to focus this conversation on alternative  scoliosis treatment performed by a chiropractor. There are no medical doctors  that currently support chiropractic as a legitimate treatment method for  scoliosis and for good reason chiropractic colleges, state associations, or  state licensing boards do not support or recommend that chiropractors treat  scoliosis as a primary care doctor would but rather only as an adjunct for pain  relief.

It is very important to acknowledge that chiropractors that claim to be able  to treat scoliosis from a corrective perspective are not supported by their  profession unless they have received a minimum of 100 hours of post-graduate  course study and are doing so with an orthopedic specialist as the primary care  physician. The importance of understanding the difference between an appropriate  alternative chiropractic choice and an inappropriate chiropractic choice can be  simplified into first and foremost training. If a chiropractor has legitimate  certification and appropriate post-graduate training directly related to the  alternative scoliosis treatment then and only then is the chiropractor qualified  to work with the primary care physician in attempting to reduce and stabilize  scoliosis curvature. If not, the chiropractor should only be providing symptom  care as needed and should not be communicating that the primary goal is to treat  the scoliosis.

There are three primary post-graduate programs available for alternative  scoliosis treatment performed by a chiropractor, CLEAR Scoliosis Treatment,  Spinecor Bracing, and the Schroth method. CLEAR Scoliosis Treatment performed by  CLEAR Scoliosis Institute’s highest certification level termed “intensive  certified” reaches the 100 hour requirement. The official Schroth certification  list has only 4 chiropractors in the U.S. who are certified to provide this  method and three of the five are also certified in Spinecor bracing techniques.  To be Schroth certified the chiropractor would need to go to the clinic in  Germany for official training. Spinecor certification require only 2 days of  classroom and 4-6 patient fittings each 2 hours in length before certification  is granted. So when considering alternative scoliosis treatment from a  chiropractor in the United States be sure to check their credentials  thoroughly.

In conclusion it is important to acknowledge that alternative scoliosis  treatment does exist and it is legitimate when provided by a trained  practitioner. The results may vary and it would be wise to also include the  primary care physician when seeking alternative treatment for scoliosis and  especially adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.
